-- PROMISE OF SUPPORT FROM EUROPE
President Abdullah Gul, who cancelled his visits to Iraq and Israel due to a problem with his ear, represented Turkey at an Egyptian summit since Premier Tayyip Erdogan was in Brussels. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, European Union (EU) President Czech Republic, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Egypt, Jordan, Arab League and Turkey attended the Sharm al-Sheik summit. Arab countries became a "single voice" for the first time since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on Gaza, and called on all parties "to put and end to this dispute in 2009". Europe pledged to extend assistance. France, Britain, Germany, and the United States said they could extend support to end arms trafficking.
-- CRISIS SEER'S FORECAST ABOUT TURKEY
Economy professor Nouriel Roubini, who is called "seer" as he warned a year before the global economic crisis that a crisis was approaching, said that Turkey had to reach a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in order to overcome the recession and re-gain confidence. Roubini said that Turkey wrote a success story with the IMF during its economic crisis of 2001. "Turkey has got its share from the economic crisis even though it is shock-resistant," Roubini also said.

-- TEN NEGLIGENCE KILLING DINK
Journalist-writer Hrant Dink of Armenian descent was killed two years ago because of a chain of blunders and negligence. Erhan Tuncel working as an intelligence agent with the code name of "Mehmet Kurt" informed the Provincial Security Department in the northern province of Trabzon on Feb. 15, 2006 that Yasin Hayal was masterminding a plan to assassinate Dink. Tuncel warned security officials in his report that Hayal was determined to put his plan into practice.
-- ERDOGAN: "DOES GAZA BELONG TO ISRAEL?"
Since his last visit four years ago, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan left for Brussels to hold a series of talks with EU officials. Addressing some 10,000 people in Hasselt city of Belgium, Erdogan continued giving harsh messages to Israel. "Does Gaza belong to Israel? What is Israel doing there?" he asked. "I talked to the president of Palestine and he told me that two thirds of Israeli territories belonged to them. I hope that Israel would abide by the truce," Erdogan said.   Â

-- IN BRUSSELS AFTER FOUR YEARS
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan went to Brussels on Sunday for the first time since the summit on December 2004. Erdogan, who will be holding meetings with EU officials in Brussels for two days said, "This extensive visit is the expression of our determination in our EU accession and reform process."
-- ALLEGATIONS SUGGEST A NEW PROSECUTOR WILL BE ASSIGNED TO ERGENEKON
While Prime Minister Erdogan says Ergenekon prosecutor Zekeriya Oz is like Antonio Di Pietro, the prosecutor of "Mani Pulite", rumors in Ankara suggest that his powers will be restricted. According to allegations, initially new prosecutors will be assigned to the case, and then the powers will be handed over to one of those prosecutors.

-- NEITHER INVITATION NOR THANKS
Israel has ignored Turkey, which has exerted great efforts in the search of a ceasefire in the Middle East since the beginning of the Gaza conflict. World leaders, who contributed to peace in the region, convened in Sharm al Sheikh city of Egypt. President Abdullah Gul was in attendance at the meeting on behalf of Turkey. At the end of the meeting, Israeli President Ehud Olmert invited European leaders to a dinner in Israel. But, the name of the Turkish president was not on the list of the guests. Also, Israel enlisted countries contributing to the ceasefire and thanked them. Turkey, again, was not on the list.

-- "THERE WILL BE NO 11TH WAVE"
Mahir Kaynak, a former member of the National Intelligence Agency (MIT), said, "The United States will designate a new role for Turkey in the Middle East. But the struggle must end eventually. Ergenekon resisted, and weapons were found. If it resists more, new evidence could emerge. There are numerous unsolved homicides. Bodies could be found. Those who committed crimes will be sentenced. But no one can be punished for their political views and targets. Ergenekon must be eradicated. Therefore, according to my point of view, there will be no 11th wave of arrests under Ergenekon."

-- ERDOGAN DOES NOT RENOMINATE 110 OF AKP'S MAYORS
The Justice and Development Party (AKP) which determined most of its candidates for the municipal elections on March 29, did not re-nominate 35 percent of its current mayors. This percentage showed that AKP officials found certain mayors unsuccessful. The AKP, which was expected to nominate female candidates in the municipal elections, did not meet expectations.

-- LEVENT ERSOZ STILL IN INTENSIVE CARE
The Ergenekon case will continue with the 39th hearing on Monday. The case is expected to continue with the cross-examination and defense of Labor Party leader Dogu Perincek. Retired Gen. Levent Ersoz, who was hospitalized due to a heart condition after he was taken into custody under Ergenekon case, is still in the intensive care unit. An AA reporter who was attacked by one of Ersoz's relatives, got a disability for service report from doctors.

-- THIS PAIN WILL NOT FADE
It has been two years since Turkey lost Hrant Dink, the editor-in-chief of the Agos weekly newspaper. Promises that justice would prevail have not been kept yet. The forces behind the assassination have not been brought to light yet. The source of the fatal weapons is not known yet. The legal process regarding public officials responsible for the murder "that happened openly" is proceeding very slowly.

-- ERDOGAN: OCCUPATION AND BLOCKADE SHOULD END
Premier Tayyip Erdogan did not think the unilateral ceasefire of Israel was enough, and said that the occupation should end and the blockade should be lifted. Erdogan gave significant messages in a press conference he held before flying to Brussels for a European Union summit. Erdogan said the international community should definitely assume an attitude against Israel. "Stopping these attacks is important for the prevention of killing of more innocent civilians," he said.

-- ERGENEKON CLEANING IS STATE DECISION
Journalist Avni Ozgurel said that those involved in February 28 process, discovered the Ergenekon organization. "Hilmi Ozkok (a former chief of general staff) changed the process. Yasar Buyukanit (also a former chief of general staff) got changed at the headquarters. Ilker Basbug (the current chief of general staff) is dominating the army and well-managing the historic change of the army." Ozgurel said, "The army is being hurt in the Ergenekon investigation, but they will endure the process. They have no decision to prevent the investigation. The military will pave the way ahead for a military inquiry."

-- LUFTHANSA AIRCRAFT ABOUT TO CRASH IN SEFAKOY
A German airline company Lufthansa aircraft took off from Istanbul for Frankfurt on Saturday. There was an explosion in the engine just 12 minutes after take off. Engine pieces showered down on the Sefakoy neighborhood of Istanbul. The captain managed to land the Airbus-321 with 134 passengers aboard at Ataturk Airport.
