-- MUBARAK DOES NOT EVEN MENTION NAME OF HAMAS
President Abdullah Gul and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met for Middle East peace in Istanbul. During the press conference at the Ciragan Palace, Mubarak did not even mention the name of Hamas, and said that the sole legitimate representative of Palestine was the Palestine Liberation Organization.

-- BY-PASS NEXT WEEK Â
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan will undergo a by-pass surgery in the Cleveland Clinic in the United States next week. Murat Tuzcu, one of the leading doctors in the clinic, said after Unakitan's check-up that the minister had good morale. Tuzcu of Turkish descent said the minister could start working again within two months.

-- BUDGET SHOULD BE REVISED
Treasury Undersecretary Ibrahim Canakci said budget targets for 2009 needed to be revised. "Revenue projections were made according to 4 percent growth. When the performances in 2008 are also taken into consideration, these figures are open to a downward revision," he said.

-- EVEN INVESTIGATION DOES NOT STOP GOVERNOR
After the Higher Board of Elections announced that donation of white goods was an act aiming to influence the voters, Tunceli Chief Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation. But even the investigation did not stop the governor. The Governor's office which halted giving away white goods, started back in the afternoon.

-- 9 MEMBERS OF SABANCI FAMILY SELLING SHARES
Nine members of the Sabanci family including Sevket Kazanci and their children will sell their shares in Akbank and Sabanci Group. The Sabanci family members who want to sell 8.37 percent shares of Akbank and 15.83 percent shares of Sabanci Group are: Ali Sabanci, Demet Cetindogan, Emine Kamisli, Omer Sabanci, Ozcan Sabanci, Sevket Sabanci, Zerrin Sabanci, Kasim Koseoglu and Can Koseoglu.

-- "WE APPRECIATE TURKEY'S ATTITUDE"
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrived in Istanbul on a two-day visit. President Abdullah Gul and Mubarak had a meeting in Ciragan Palace. A road map was formed for Palestine in the meeting: 1) Lasting truce. 2) Unity among groups. 3) Rebuilding of Gaza. 4) Long-term plan. Mubarak said that Egypt supported Turkey's role in the region and appreciated its attitude regarding the Arab issue.

-- EU APPROVES DRAFT REPORT ON TURKEY
The European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs has approved a draft report on Turkey. During the voting, 65 MEPs cast their votes in favor of the draft report while four rejected it and one abstained. Rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten said this report should be the mirror of Turkey.

-- TURKEY: ONLY COUNTRY THAT HAS NOT TAKEN MEASURES
According to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report, Turkey is the only country among G-20 states that has not taken measures to revive economy. The IMF thinks the world will grow 0.5 percent but Turkey will shrink 1.5 percent in 2009.

-- MILITARY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE SEEKING "MOLE"
Air Forces Military Prosecutor's Office announced that six people, who were detained in Istanbul, Ankara and Balikesir the previous day within the framework of the secret quarters investigation, were "civilian." The detainees are being interrogated for taking a report of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) regarding "secret quarters" outside military headquarters.      Â

-- DENIZ FENERI IN EP'S REPORT
The report on Turkey which was adopted in the European Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee asked Turkey's government to be in close cooperation with the judiciary regarding the Deniz Feneri loot. The report which criticized Premier Tayyip Erdogan for targeting the media, welcomed trial of the suspects in the Ergenekon case.

-- "SECRET QUARTERS": 6 CIVILIANS BEING INTERROGATED
The interrogation of the 6 people who were taken into custody by the military prosecutor of the Turkish Air Forces, still continues. All 6 people who were taken into custody, under allegations regarding the "secret quarters" within the Turkish Armed Forces, are civilians. Turkish Labor Party's acting chairman Mehmet Bedri Gultekin was also taken into custody.

!f Istanbul AFM International Independent Film Festival will begin on Thursday. 25 independent films will be screened during the festival which will run till February 22.

-- BUDGET DEFICIT REACHES 3 BLN TL
According to the Turkish Ministry of Finance, the budget deficit was 2.9 billion Turkish liras (TL) in the first month of 2009. The budget deficit increased by 466 percent in January 2009 when compared to the same month of 2008. Treasury Undersecretary Ibrahim Canakci said that budget figures for 2009 should be revised downwards.

-- I SAW BOSPHORUS BEFORE I DIE
President Abdullah Gul hosted Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak in Istanbul. Mubarak who is visiting Turkey to help establish peace in Palestine, also got together with Premier Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting took place in the Ciragan Palace when Mubarak wanted to see the Bosphorus. Mubarak was briefed on Bosphorus and the Marmaray project.

-- SALE OF SHARES IN SABANCI GROUP
The decision of Sevket Sabanci and his children to sell their shares in Sabanci group and Akbank dropped like bomb on the market. Sevket Sabanci, who is one of the three sons of Haci Omer Sabanci that are still alive, decided the part ways along with his children. Ozdemir Sabnci's son Demir Sabanci had left earlier. Only Erol Sabanci and inheritors of Sakip and Ihsan Sabanci are still in the group. The 6.97 percent fall in Akbank's shares prior to the announcement of Sevket Sabanci's decision, brought to minds the question, whether some people had learned the decision beforehand. The total value of the two companies fell by 15 percent because of the dispute over shares.
