-- 4.5 MILLION TL COLLECTED FOR GAZA ON LIVE BROADCAST
Nearly 4.5 million TL was collected under an assistance campaign for Gaza on a joint live broadcast by Kanal D and Star TV channels in association with Red Crescent. The biggest donations were made by Dogus Group and Dogan Group which each donated 500,000 TL. (1 USD = 1.615 TL)

-- OPEN VISIT TO PRISONERS ON VALENTINE'S DAY
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin issued a notice. Accordingly, for the first time prisoners will be allowed to see their spouses and children on Valentine's Day.

-- APPROVAL TO SOMALIA MISSION
Parliament approved a motion which allows Turkish Armed Forces to capture Somali pirates and protect commercial vessels. All opposition parties, except the Democratic Society Party, supported the motion.

-- THIS TIME MILITARY PROSECUTOR ORDERS IT
Several individuals mentioned in a report on "secret quarters" by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) were detained in an operation launched by the Air Forces Command's military prosecutor. The report came to the fore after the Ergenekon probe. Together with police and gendarmerie teams, military squads detained these figures in Istanbul and Ankara. They first caught Ibrahim Aslan, who was said to be "number one" in MIT report. Two civilians, who were not mentioned in the report but had links to Aslan, were also taken into custody. In Ankara, a prominent figure of Turkey's Workers' Party (IP) was detained.

-- ERDOGAN AND CHAVEZ ON HAMAS BILLBOARDS
In Dahiya, a poor neighborhood in the Lebanese capital Beirut, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez's posters are seen lining the roads. Erdogan and Chavez are depicted as "two brave men" in this Hezbollah-controlled region where Shi’ites live. They are shown as role models compared to the Arab leaders who remained silent.

Independent parliamentarian Mesut Yilmaz, former chairman of Anavatan (Motherland) Party, said he concluded preparations for a political party which he says would be an alternative to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). "I only need a sign as a support at the upcoming (local) elections. I will start after the elections," he said.

-- FINANCE MINISTER FLIES TO U.S. FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan traveled to the United States for further treatment after he was discharged from a hospital where he underwent a coronary angiogram. Unakitan was diagnosed with three blocked arteries. The Turkish finance minister will be admitted to the Cleveland Clinic where he is expected to be treated by Turkish M.D. Prof. Murat Tuzcu.

-- FOREIGN PARTNERS TO NATIONAL MEATBALL RESTAURANTS CHAIN
Turkey's famous restaurants chain, Sultanahmet Koftecisi, a meatball maker, has moved to sign a partnership deal with foreign investors. The restaurants chain has 80 branches in 20 cities in Turkey with a total annualof $80 million turnover. It is planning to open 60 new branches in 2010.

-- SECRET QUARTERS OPERATION
Police detained two officers in Balikesir and three others in Istanbul under an instruction of the chief prosecutor with the Air Forces. Bedri Gultekin, the deputy chairman of the Workers' Party (IP), and Ibrahim Aslan, a businessman who is at the top of the secret quarters scheme, will be interrogated within the scope of the operation. The military prosecutor's office earlier took the testimonies of 20 officers and War College students within the scope of a document titled "IP/Secret Quarters". The document was seized in the IP headquarters within the framework of the Ergenekon investigation. The military prosecutor's office launched a second operation on Tuesday, and five officers and one civilian were detained in two cities under an instruction of Air Forces Military Chief Prosecutor Zeki Ucok. The detainees were sent to Ankara.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan drew attention that the votes of his party had been on the rise in the last three elections, and spoke ambitiously about the upcoming local elections on March 29: "34 percent (2002), 42 percent (2007) and 47 percent (2009)."

-- TURKISH PARLIAMENT APPROVES MOTION TO DEPLOY NAVAL FORCES AT GULF OF ADEN
Turkish parliament approved a motion authorizing the government to send naval forces to the Gulf of Aden to protect commercial vessels from pirates. The motion authorizes the Turkish government to send forces to the Gulf of Aden, Somali coastal waters, the Arabian Sea and adjacent regions. Turkish forces to be deployed under the authorization will not participate at a ground operation against pirates on Somali soil.

Office of a military prosecutor in Turkish capital Ankara ordered the arrest of seven people including five officers under an investigation into a suspected illegal network within the army. Mehmet Bedri Gultekin, deputy chairman of the Workers' Party, are among those who were arrested.

-- WORST SITUATION OF LAST 18 YEARS IN INDUSTRY
Turkey is feeling the impacts of global economic crisis more each day. A fall the in domestic market and a drop in exports badly hit capacity utilization in industry. The capacity utilization rate in industry for January dropped to the lowest rate of the last 18 years. It decreased 16.5 points to 63.8 percent in January 2009 when compared to January 2008.

Turkey will play a friendly match against Ivory Coast in they western province of Izmir ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifying group match with Spain on March 28.

-- SURGERY TO BE IN UNITED STATES
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan, who received treatment at the Hacettepe University Teaching Hospital for heart problems, departed for the United States to undergo surgery. Unakitan said, "I am going for treatment, and we will see whether they will place a coronary stent or perform a by-pass surgery when we get there." Unakitan said that he would return after the treatment.

-- CILLER MET CAPTAIN CATLI TWICE
Tansu Ciller received Abdullah Catli, a gang leader, twice when she was the prime minister of Turkey. Catli visited the Prime Ministry building in a military uniform. Catli entered the building from the back door, and he was introduced to Ciller as a distinguished and experienced officer. Ciller asked captain Catli what should be done to counter the terrorist organization PKK, listened to Catli's proposals and took notes. After the meeting, Ciller said, "If a law is required, then we will adopt it. If sources are required, we will find and give it. And if authorization is required, we will also give it" and showed she was determined to eradicate terrorism. Catli came to the Prime Ministry building a second time out of uniform. Ciller was not a prime minister that had a state background, so it was only natural that she did not recognize Catli. Her primary target was to eradicate terrorism, and therefore she trusted Dogan Gures Pasha in the General Staff and Mehmet Agar in the Security Department. She did not have any staff to fight terrorism. Catli was introduced as a hero under extraordinary conditions.
