-- PAIN OF DEATH OF 10 SOLDIERS
Painful news came in the early morning hours yesterday. Nine soldiers were killed by a land-mine trap that targeted their armored vehicle in Lice in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir. Another soldier was killed in the town of Semdinli of the southeastern province of Sirnak.

-- BROAD OPERATION LAUNCHED
Remnants of the M-113 armored personnel vehicle that was hit by a landmine were gathered and loaded into a truck. Units were transferred to the region immediately after the incident and launched a broad operation.Â

-- THERMAL SCANNING FOR 42,500 LIRAS
Swine flu spread to Germany, where hundreds of thousands of Turks live. A thermal camera that was put into service at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport shows people who have a body temperature over 38.5 degrees. The camera cost 42,500 Turkish Liras.

-- MINE TRAP: 9 SOLDIERS KILLED
A tank and an armored vehicle were attacked Wednesday morning with remote-controlled mines. Terrorists detonated 100 kilograms of explosives planted on the roadside. Two specialized sergeants and seven privates in the vehicle – which a 4-centimeter-thick layer of armor – were killed. Another soldier was killed with gunfire opened by PKK terrorists in the town of Semdinli in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

-- FORMER MINISTER TURK SURVIVES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
An assassination attempt targeting Hikmet Sami Turk, who was the justice minister during the Return to Life operations at prisons, occurred Wednesday at Bilkent University, where Turk gives lectures. Security guards who noticed the suspected suicide bomber, Didem Akman, approaching Turk as he was entering the class, jumped on him. When one of the wires connected to the bomb wrapped around her body became loose, the attacker was wounded by one of the fuses that went off. Another person who is charged with helping Akman was caught at a bus terminal.

-- SUICIDE BOMBER TO TURK
Former Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk escaped an attempted attack by suspected DHKP-C member Didem Akman at the last moment. Turk’s bodyguards stopped Akman as she was trying to detonate the bombs on herself at Bilkent University. Turk said the reason behind the attack was Operation Return to Life in prisons in 2000.

-- IMKB RISES TO 30,000 POINTS AMID SPRING ATMOSPHERE
The Istanbul Stock Exchange, or IMKB, increased 5.34 percent yesterday thanks to the expectation of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, the banking sector's prediction of high profit in the first quarter and the rise in world stock markets. The IMKB, which reached its highest figure since Oct. 9, 2008, closed at 30,746 points.

-- TURK ESCAPES DEATH FOR SECOND TIME
Former Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk – who has continuously been threatened since the Operation Return to Life was implemented nine years ago – escaped a suicide attack for the second time yesterday. Didem Akman, 23, a militant of DHKP-C, arrived at Bilkent University yesterday with 4 kilograms of explosives she had wrapped on herself. She approached Turk from behind at 10:40 a.m. and fired the mechanism that would detonate the bombs. But only the fuse exploded, not the bomb.

-- ERGENEKON WEAPONS DON'T BELONG TO TURKISH MILITARY
Turkey's General Staff Chief Gen. Ilker Basbug said weapons and explosives seized within the scope of the Ergenekon probe did not belong to the Turkish Armed Forces, or TSK. Basbug, who questioned the recovery of five empty LAWs from underground in Poyrazkoy, said there were no missing ammunitions in the TSK's inventory. Basbug pointed out that ammunition produced in Turkey was also allocated to the police department.

Basbug said the TSK did not have any weapons buried underground and cleared doubts over this issue. Basbug, who noted that all individuals were innocent until proven guilty in court, said the TSK did not have any documents regarding the diaries claimed to belong to Ozden Ornek. Basbug said the TSK was loyal to the state of law and democracy, noting that anyone who believed otherwise could not take refuge in the TSK.

-- NATURAL GAS RETALIATION
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Turkey purchased natural gas from Russia for $400, while it purchased natural gas from Azerbaijan for $120, noting that they were selling the natural gas to Turkey at a loss. Aliyev said the tariff in the agreement signed in 2001 with the $120 maximum price limit for 1,000 cubic meters had expired.

-- 10 VICTIMS OF TERROR IN ONE DAY
A military convoy consisting of a tank and an armored military transport was attacked by PKK terrorists on the Lice-Genc road. The explosion, which took place as the armored military transport was passing, killed two specialized sergeants and seven privates. Another soldier was killed in Hakkari when PKK terrorists opened fire on a unit returning from an operation.

-- TAKSIM SQUARE CLOSED TO LABOR DAY CELEBRATIONS
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said: "Taksim Square in Istanbul was not open to demonstrations. This is not a decision made in our term in office. If you give permission to labor unions, you will have to allow all groups who want to demonstrate." Istanbul Gov. Muammer Guler said, "No entrance to Taksim. We will not allow illegal organizations to make provocations."

Former Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk became the target of an attempted assassination by a suicide bomber. Suicide bomber Didem Akman, who approached Turk as he was entering his Constitutional Law class, set the fuse off but failed to detonate the bomb. The militant was neutralized by Turk's security guards.

The decision of the European Court of Justice regarding David and Linda Oram, who built a villa in northern Cyprus, created panic in England. Around 5,000 Britons face the danger of losing their residences.
