-- POLICE, TERRORIST CLASH IN ISTANBUL HIDEOUT
Police teams launched an operation against a suspected terrorist hideout in Istanbul on Monday. A senior police officer and a civilian were killed while seven police officers and a cameraman were injured during the operation that saw some terrible mistakes: The operation was carried out on insufficient intelligence. People living in the building were not evacuated. The suspected terrorist made a brief propaganda through a police radio that he seized from the police officer he killed. Police forgot to take security measures on the rear street of the building. Television stations made live broadcasts about the police operation.

-- TURKISH MINISTER, GERMAN PROSECUTION CONTRADICT ON DENIZ FENERI
Two contradictory statements have come recently from the Turkish justice minister and from the spokesperson of the German prosecution on a fraud case allegedly involving a Germany-based charity and a number of Turkish officials. Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin said a second dossier had arrived from the German authorities and that it was translated into Turkish. But the spokesperson for the office of the chief prosecutor in Frankfurt, Dorris Muller Scheu, had said they had only sent a single dossier after they had had it translated into Turkish according to an agreement with Turkey.

-- CONTROVERSIAL OPERATION
A police officer and a civilian were killed while eight people were injured in a helter-skelter operation in a hideout in Istanbul’s Bostanci district. A terrorist was also killed in the operation. Police launched an operation against five illegal organizations that were planning to stage bloody attacks on May 1 and raided nearly 50 hideouts. Forty people were detained. During one of the raids, Orhan Yilmazkaya, one of leaders of the leftist group Revolutionary Headquarters, threw bombs at security forces. Senior police officer Semih Balaban was killed in the shootout, which lasted about six hours.

Police detained 154 people in an operation held simultaneously against radical Islamist organizations in 14 different provinces. Thirteen members of the Vasat organization were arrested in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa.

-- A PRE-DAWN OPERATION
An illegal organization, the Revolutionary Headquarters, which was allegedly planning to stage attacks on May 1, was destroyed after a 6.5-hour shootout in Istanbul. Nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers raided 60 places and detained 40 people during an operation against illegal organizations. The clash in Istanbul erupted when a member of the Revolutionary Headquarters opened fire on security forces from his hideout in the Bostanci neighborhood. The shootout, which was broadcast live by TV channels, engulfed residents in the neighborhood in panic. Police chief Semih Balaban was killed while trying to enter the hideout. A 16-year-old bystander was also killed after being struck by a stray bullet. Seven police officers and a journalist were injured. Orhan Yilmazkaya, one of leaders of the organization, was killed in the hideout. It was revealed that he threw 12 grenades at security forces.

Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, leader Deniz Bahceli warned the U.S. ambassador in Ankara: "That's enough. The Turkish people do not want to experience an April 24 syndrome each year. That syndrome triggers anti-American tendencies."

-- FORMER TOP TURKISH GENERAL GIVES TESTIMONY IN ERGENEKON CASE
Former Chief of General Staff retired Gen. Hilmi Ozkok gave testimony Saturday to the prosecutors investigating the Ergenekon case. The prosecutors secretly met with Ozkok in the western province of Izmir during an eight-hour debriefing. "They asked me questions about the information they need on the case, and I objectively told them what I know," Ozkok said Monday.

-- EARTHQUAKE IN MARMARA
A 4.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the Marmara Sea late on Monday, causing fear and panic in Istanbul and Tekirdag. The epicenter of the earthquake was off-coast of Istanbul's Yenikoy district. A 3.1-magnitude aftershock jolted the region a half-hour later.

-- ISRAEL UNEASY OVER TURKISH-SYRIAN MILITARY EXERCISE
Israeli authorities expressed uneasiness Monday over a joint military exercise carried out by Turkish and Syrian border troops. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak described the exercise as "a disturbing development." The joint exercise is considered a new sign of the tripartite military alliance between Turkey, Syria and Lebanon.

Canada's legendary musician, poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen is set to perform in Istanbul. Cohen will take the stage in two special concerts on Aug. 5-6 at Istanbul's Cemil Topuzlu Openair Theatre as part of his world tour. Cohen, 76, is considered one of the most important and influential songwriters of contemporary music.

Mehmet Nida Garipoglu, father of Cem Garipoglu, who was wanted by the police for his alleged involvement in the killing of a young girl, has been arrested. The girl, Munevver Karabulut, was beheaded, and her body was dumped in a trash container about two months ago. Her killing created public outrage.
