-- ‘WE NARROWLY RESCUED ECEVIT’

Recai Birgun, the former chief bodyguard of ex-prime minister Bulent Ecevit, said: "Ecevit was to be assassinated when he was going to the Cankaya presidential palace. We took him away and hid him." Birgun, a lawmaker from the Democratic Left Party, or DSP, was close to Bulent Ecevit until he died and made striking remarks about a dark period of Turkish history. "In 2001, we got a tip-off that horrified us," Birgun said. "Those who were plotting the assassination knew that Ecevit would go to the Cankaya presidential palace for a reception, but this was not an earlier set schedule. This frightened us. We took the prime minister away in front of the media. The journalists followed a vehicle that did not have the prime minister in it. We hid Ecevit for 24 hours. We could not get any information about the source." The DSP lawmaker said that the doctors kept Ecevit out of politics as if he were sick.

-- TURKEY: UNEMPLOYMENT CHAMPION OF EUROPE

The unemployment rate in Turkey reached 15.5 percent, the highest rate in the history of the republic. The number of the unemployed reached 3.65 million. According to figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institution, the unemployment rate reached 25.7 percent when people who have no hope of finding a job are included. This means one out of every four working-age people is unemployed. The number of those employed was also down 863,000. But because the calculations are based on participation rate in the work force, the number of unemployed looks as if it rose only by 376,000. These figures make Turkey the unemployment champion in Europe; Turkey takes second in the world behind South Africa.
