-- ALLEGATIONS ABOUT SUMMIT IN MOSCOW
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan is preparing to meet with President Dmitriy Medvedev of Russia in Moscow on April 16. The meeting will focus on Upper Karabakh dispute. PanArmenia News Agency of Armenia claimed that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan would also be in Moscow on the same day.

-- FROM MAIDEN'S TOWER TO RED TOWER
President Abdullah Gul waved the checkered flag at the start of a 142-km Turkey Cycling Tour. The eight-day tour, which began in Istanbul and will end in Alanya town in the southern province of Antalya, is also known as "from Maiden's Tower to Red Tower". Mauro Finetto of Italy from "CSF Group Navigare" won the first phase of the race.

-- TURKEY MAY HELP OBAMA
Mark Parris, who served as ambassador of the United States to Turkey when Bill Clinton was president, commented on the recent visit of U.S. President Barack Obama to Turkey. Asked why Obama visited Turkey, Parris said, "When you take over such severe and urgent problems, you start looking for friends that will help you. Turkey may help Obama more than anybody else."

-- 14 HAND GRENADES IN MALATYA
Some 14 hand grenades and a smoke bomb were found in a box removed from an irrigation canal belonging to the Turkish Waterworks Directorate. The box was discovered in the mud by a member of the public. The bombs were wrapped in newspapers dated 1997 and 1999.

-- TWO CONDITIONS FOR KURDS
Iraqi Kurdish parliamentarian Mahmoud Osman, who is known for his close relations with the terrorist organization PKK, spoke of the behind the scenes talks of U.S. President Barack Obama's meeting with Iraqi Kurdish leaders during his visit to Iraq. According to this information, Obama sent the regional administration in the northern Iraq two clear messages:

Baghdad condition: Our ties with you will weaken as your ties with Baghdad weaken. We consider the Kurdish region a part of Iraq. Ankara condition: the United States will move closer to you in line with your approach to Turkey. If you turn away from Turkey, we will become distant to you.

The International Monetary Fund and Turkey agreed in principle on a three-year loan deal.

-- SENER TO FORM HIS NEW PARTY ON APRIL 26
Abdullatif Sener, who has been carrying out his political works under the name of New Formation Movement after resigning from the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, will form his new political party on April 26. A petition regarding the foundation of the new political party with nearly 40 founding members including former deputies and ministers, will be submitted to the Interior Ministry on April 27.

--"WE GOT MAY DAY, WE WILL ALSO GET TAKSIM"
Suleyman Celebi, chairman of the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), said that the May Day should be celebrated in Istanbul's Taksim Square. "If the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, had won 47 percent of votes in the local elections, the May Day would have not been declared a public holiday. Now, I call on the government to let us to celebrate the May Day in Taksim Square out of respect to the 34 people who died there in 1977," he said.

-- GATES IS NEXT
Following U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will be the next American top official to visit Turkey. He is expected to travel to Turkey in April or early May. Gates will have talks with Turkish officials on Turkey's additional military support to Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq through Turkey.

-- TRAVERSING ISTANBUL IN LILLE
Martine Aubry, socialist mayor of the French city of Lille, organized a wide-ranging cultural activity titled "Europe XXL" which largely featured Turkey. One of the glorious events of the activity to continue until July 12 will be the exhibition "Istanbul Traversee" which will take place at the Fine Arts Museum, one of the most charming places in town.

-- OVERTIME WORK FOR UNION
Labor Minister Faruk Celik will knock on the doors of political parties for a union law that will be in line with the criteria of International Labor Organization, or ILO. A draft resolution regarding unions was brought to the agenda prior to the ILO meeting in May. Labor Minister Celik will visit political parties that have groups in the parliament to discuss the bill that was prepared for adjustment with the EU. ILO Turkey representative Gulay Aslantepe said, "Turkey has been under criticism since 1984 on union rights. The minister is decisive on the matter."

-- ISSUES DIFFICULT WITH IMF
State Minister Mehmet Simsek, in an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal, said, "Ee have not yet reached an agreement with the IMF. There are matters to be negotiated. The results may continue until the end of month."

-- "I WILL SETTLE ACCOUNT FOR IT"
Two Turkish soldiers killed in the southeastern province of Sirnak were laid to rest after a ceremony in Istanbul. President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, ministers and high-ranking army officers attended the ceremony held in the Atakoy district for Tuncay Turken, one of the martyrs. Turken's 9-year-old brother Yasin, who stood next to Erdogan at the ceremony, was devastated. "I will settle accounts with murderers of my brother," he screamed.

-- GOKHAN STIRS UNITED STATES
Turkish news anchor Gokhan Taskin, who painted his face black during his hour long TV channel, caused controversy in the United States. Taskin, who earlier wore a headscarf while anchoring the news, quoted the Turkish proverb (Isteyenin bir yuzu kara, vermeyenin iki yuzu) "the one who asks [for something] has one side of his face dark (black); the one who refuses (to give) has both sides" as roughly translated. (This is a Turkish saying about promises not kept resulting in a "dark face," which translates into shame here.) His words were assessed as racism in the United States.
