ANKARA - Turkey’s leading business group has urged political parties and the government to return to the country’s real agenda following the heated March 29 local elections. "Right now we must all focus on our genuine agenda," Arzuhan Yalçındağ, chairwoman of the Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association, or TÜSİAD, told reporters at a news conference yesterday.

Her remarks came after a luncheon with European Union ambassadors at the residence of the Czech envoy to Ankara. The Czech Republic is the current holder of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Yalçındağ said the business world welcomed the end of the election process, as there are urgent problems that need to be addressed, including the global financial crisis. She added that TÜSİAD would be paying close attention to the G20 summit beginning today in London.

Asked about the impact of the financial downturn on the election results, Yalçındağ said, "I am not sure of its impact, and I am not sure to what extent the crisis has been felt in different regions of the country."

She added that the election process was positive for democracy and called for its results to be accurately evaluated by the political parties.
