Following a month long of campaigning party leaders have finally returned to their constituencies as polling stations opened in the UK this morning at 7am with the electorate having until 10pm to cast their vote. Results are expected at around 11.30pm. Official polls predict that Labour will win with a majority of 130 lower than the last election where Labour won with 165, but enough to see the party into its third term.

Turnout will be crucial as polls put 36% of the voters as undecided. The last general election in 2001 saw a turn out of 59%, the lowest since the return of troops from World War I.

The Liberal Democrats believe with their opposition to the Iraqi War that they may have a good chance to gain votes bringing the party to a new height of status. Conservatives are hoping to secure many more than 50 extra seats and are forecasting significant gains for the party.
