ISTANBUL - Hobby gardening has become popular in recent years due to the boom in compound properties with large communal gardens. With breaking loose from the mundane metropolis becoming more difficult, hobby gardening has pushed through to the forefront of escapism among the chaos and concrete buildings of the city.

Hobby gardening has become popular in recent years due to the boom in compound properties with large communal gardens, and has resulted in a trend of amateur gardening among businessmen who have taken to their gardens to grow their own vegetables and flowers, according to Kemal Eskenazi, General Director of Turkish gardening company, Botanika. Because interest in the activity as recreation has grown in compound property developments, Botanika has been working to spread the seed of gardening to the everyday city resident whether they have a windowsill, balcony, terrace or garden.

"Hobby gardening is not a costly activity and a hobby garden can be created according to any budget," Eskenazi said in an interview with the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

Over the past year Botanika has hosted gardening workshops to encourage people to take up the hobby. The workshops are open to anyone interested in growing their own plants and vegetables at home.

Alongside the workshops, Botanika has launched a range of boxes for people to grow their own organic herbs and vegetables on their windowsills, a concept which is becoming increasingly popular in Turkey, according to Eskenazi. "More and more people are turning to organic food because of health concerns over pesticides, and windowsill boxes are the perfect answer to organic vegetables and herbs with the added bonus of being able to enjoy growing them yourself at home," said Eskenazi

One of Botanika’s key focuses for 2009 is to educate people about gardening so that it becomes a hobby that is incorporated into the culture. "We will start by introducing basic gardening into prep-schools, where children will be assigned one lesson a week to learn how to plant flowers and watch them grow, which will hopefully help them develop a interest from a young age," she said.

Sevda Solak, a mother who has been growing window box plants, said her 3-year-old son showed great enthusiasm watching parsley grow on the windowsill over the course of two months.

"He would sit by the pots for hours monitoring their growth," Solak said.

Botanika sells a vast range of products for professional and hobby gardening. Details of their products can be found at www.botanika.com.tr
