ISTANBUL - Garanti Bank and Western Union launched a cooperation Tuesday enabling Garanti customers receiving transfers from overseas to receive the cash directly into bank accounts.
With the venture, Garanti customers will also be able to make dollar and euro transfers to the 334,000 global Western Union service points.
Western Union Turkey manager Nogay Kanpolat said Turkey is an important part of the firm’s operations, as around 5 million Turks reside abroad. Hikmet Ersek, Western Union deputy vice president of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, said Turkey is a key market. "We have more than 4,000 service points in Turkey. With our cooperation with Garanti, our operations will expand further," he said. Ersek also said 2008 was a record year for Western Union, which increased its revenue by 8 percent to $5.3 billion over the year. On the other hand, money transfers globally have reduced by 5 percent during the first quarter of 2009, he said.
