Results from a poll carried out by the Gallup Organization Europe show that a majority of Turkish citizens feel that Turkey has moved ahead compared to where it was 5 years ago, and are looking towards the future with hope. The poll, which Gallup says was aimed at measuring citizen trust in government and general satisfaction, was carried out in EU countries and Turkey.
While results from the Gallup poll show Turks think that their nation has moved ahead, and that their leaders are working well, most EU citizens interviewed signalled that they thought their countries had moved backwards over the past 5 years. According to the Gallup poll, which recorded the opinions of 1,000 people in Turkey, 65% of Turks "have pride in their nation," a figure followed by Greece, with 40% responding that they felt pride. Of 9 EU nations included in the poll, the Swedish came in last to the "pride" question, with only 13% responding that they felt pride in their country's current situation.
On a more negative note, Turks came in last place in the Gallup Europe poll in terms of citizen satisfaction with education, health care, and other basic governmental services. Coming in first place in this category were the Danes, 78% of whom expressed satisfaction with Denmark's basic citizen services.
