ISTANBUL - Galatasaray’s hard-working central defender Servet Çetin will join French Marseille, Turkish media reported Wednesday. A fee of 8 million euros was reportedly agreed between the two clubs and the 28-year-old Turkish international is expected to join Marseilles soon.
Should the move be completed, the Turk will become the first signing of the Didier Deschamps era. However, he is a player that Marseille have had their eye on for at least six months, with rumors touting Servet for a move in January.
The center back is one of the most fierce in the world game, with Chelsea star and former Marseille favorite Drogba admitting that Servet is an intimidating adversary. "I have never struggled like this against any defense in the Premier League. Servet is devilish. I could hear him breathe and it sent chills down the back of my neck," he told Milliyet after a friendly between Ivory Coast and Turkey in February.
Argentine defender Renato Civelli will not be offered a new deal at the Stade Velodrome, despite playing a key role towards the end of Marseille’s last season, and it seems that Servet is the man bound to replace him, reported Goal.com.
Galatasaray will use the money from Servet for new signings, and the first target could be Rayn Babel of Liverpool. Daily Mail reported Wednesday that Galatasaray’s new coach Frank Rijkaardwants to see him in his squad.
Galatasaray is likely to make an offer around 9.5 million euros for the Dutch international, Daily Mail’s report said, adding that the Istanbul club might have problems in convincing Babel to make a fresh start in Turkey.
