ISTANBUL - Galatasaray parted ways with coach Bülent Korkmaz after only three months at the helm, the club announced yesterday.

Finishing Turkcell Super League in the fifth spot, its worst record in five years, Galatasaray announced on its Web site that it accepted Korkmaz’s resignation. "Our board has accepted the resignation of Bülent Korkmaz, who has been coaching the football team since Feb. 24, 2009," the statement said.

Korkmaz replaced German coach Michael Skibbe following a run of poor results, including a humiliating 5-2 home defeat to hapless Kocaelispor, which would later finish the league 17th and be relegated.

Despite being a legend at the club because of his playing career, Korkmaz failed to turn things around as a coach. Galatasaray had seven wins, four draws and four losses during his 15-game tenure. It missed out on main goals of the season after being knocked out of the UEFA Cup and falling out of contention for the league title. Arguably the most successful player in Turkish football history, Korkmaz holds the record for most appearances for the club and shares the record of winning Turkish titles (8) with fellow former Galatasaray striker Hakan Şükür.

Galatasaray has yet to name Bülent Korkmaz's successor, but is linked to coaches including Bernd Schuster, Juande Ramos, Co Adriaanse, according to Turkish press.
