ISTANBUL - The location of an aboveground, cold air depot for Central Anatolia’s Nevşehir province, which is famous for underground cave depots, has been certified, according to Nevşehir’s commercial exchange director.

Commercial Exchange Director Tuncer Gök said the modern depot would cost 1 million euros and enhance the fruit and vegetable sector. He said it would be constructed on a 30-acre plot near Gülşehir Cd.

’Modern depot is a need’
Gök said there was an urgent need for a modern depot in Nevşehir and construction was set to begin for the 4,000-ton-capacity modern depot.

"The necessary needs are fulfilled," he said. "Nevşehir will have an above-ground depot. We are planning to use this depot for fruits and mostly grapes."

Nevşehir’s unique geological structure is known for its cavernous features and until today cold air depots were below ground and carved into rocks. Gök said the depots are used to preserve fruits and extend their productivity timescale, adding that local legend says a fruit stored in the underground depots will double its potential for juice.

There are more than 100 natural cold air depots in Kavak and Ortahisar towns, where they store potatoes and lemons. The depots are cold in the summer and warm in winter.
