ANTALYA - An international diving tournament will take place to search for the French war vessel, Paris II, sunk by Turkish artillery Capitan Mustafa Ertuğrul Aker on Antalya's Kemer coasts during World War I.
Some of the world’s most famous universities will participate in the three-day tournament, such as Sorbonne, Universite Paris, EDHEC, Cambridge and Harvard. Alexandra, another sunken vessel, will also be searched for.
The tournament, pioneered by the Akdeniz University Underground Water Union, will take place in Kemer between April 10 to 12.
"The tournament aims to commemorate Ertuğrul and his team, who also had an important role in the Independence War, and to remember the important lessons Turkish soldiers gave to the world following the wreckage of these war vessels," said Mehmet Gökoğlu, an assistant professor at the Akdeniz University in Antalya.
Stating that they would also conduct extensive research to find the war vessel Alexandra that was also sunk by Ertuğrul and his team during World War I, the assistant professor Gökoğlu declared.
"The vessel is known to have sunk somewhere on the Kemer coast, but the exact location is unknown," he said. "We will definitely find Alexandra after Paris II."
