A French skier was killed Thursday after he was caught up in an avalanche on a mountain in the northeastern province of Trabzon, Dogan News Agency reported. (UPDATED)

Mayor Mehmet Nuri Alibeyoglu told AP the skier was among a group of six skiers on an expedition in the Uzungol area in Trabzon province.

 

Alibeyoglu said the avalanche crashed onto the skier soon after the group was dropped off on a remote mountain by helicopter.

 

The five other skiers in the party were unharmed.Â

 

Uzungol, known for its scenic landscape and lake, is a popular destination for helicopter skiing expeditions.

Last month, 10 Turkish hikers died when they were buried by an avalanche some 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Uzungol.
