A Singapore-flagged freighter gone adrift Saturday in Istanbul’s busy Bosporus strait and hit the shore after developing a rudder problem, Dogan News Agency reported. No one is reported hurt. (UPDATED)

The accident caused great panic in Sariyer, where the 244-meters (800-feet) freighter hit the European bank of the waterway, the agency said.

Maritime authorities dispatched rescue boats to tow the freighter, it added.Â

The Bosporus, which bisects Istanbul, is the sole passage between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The Istanbul Strait was closed to the sea traffic after the accident, the state-run Anatolian Agency reported.Â
