A handshake between Ahmet Türk, a leader of the pro-Kurdish DTP, and MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli left its mark on the opening session of parliament yesterday.

Attending the session carrying red carnations, DTP MPs recited the parliamentary oath in Turkish. In the past, pro-Kurdish MPs have been removed from the assembly for taking the oath in Kurdish.

Bahçeli first to enter
The 23rd parliamentary period opened with four party groups, the AKP, CHP, MHP and DTP, alongside DSP, BBP and ÖDP representatives. The first leader to enter the hall was MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli.

An ordinary MP
After five years as speaker of the parliament, Bülent Arınç handed over his role to the oldest MP, CHP member Şükrü Elekdağ, who will serve as temporary speaker, and took a seat among the MPs. Arınç later went over to congratulate CHP Leader Deniz Baykal, MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli and DTP Leader Ahmet Türk.
