ANKARA - Founder of the Daily News and journalist İlhan Çevik was buried yesterday at the Karşıyaka cemetery following the noon prayer at Ankara’s Kocatepe Mosque. Çevik, who had undergone an operation for an intestinal disorder late Saturday, died Monday in an Ankara hospital at the age of 83.
Çevik’s funeral ceremony was attended by Turkey’s 9th President Süleyman Demirel, Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, Israeli Ambassador to Ankara Gaby Levy, Italian Ambassador to Ankara Carlo Marsili and his colleagues. Çevik, born in Konya, was a graduate of Victoria College in London. He began his journalism career as a reporter in 1942. He published Turkey’s first English language newspaper, Daily News, in 1961. He later turned the newspaper over to Doğan Media Group, or DMG.
