AYDIN - Building entertainment venues, promoting historical assets and improving infrastructure are typical approaches to bringing foreigners to Turkey. But there may be an easier way: simplify and make more transparent the process for obtaining a property deed in Turkey.

"The British citizens in Aydın's Didim disctrict, one of the important tourism hotspots, have difficulty in getting their deeds", said Carol Fascione, chairwoman of the Foreigners Committee.

’Legal procedures take too much time’
"The legal procedures last so long that many foreigners decide not to buy a property at all," said Fascione, adding that the property deeds for foreigners who want to buy in Turkey have to be approved by the military.

Highlighting that the land or the property firstly has to be determined whether to be in a forbidden or military area, then the documents are sent to the Regional Command, which can take three to six months, Fascione said. "Some real estate agencies neglect applying for this. There are some foreigners who have not been able to get their deeds for three years in Didim. As the duration goes on, there may be corrupt real estate agencies or middlemen who sell the property to another person at the same time."

What is of urgent need is to complete the sales procedures in one day, to determine the military or forbidden lands well beforehand, to employ people who know the language, and to act in coordination with the governmental organizations, Fascione said.

"Didim is gaining importance as a tourism center. It will further flourish in the coming years with the completion of the marina. Urgent solutions to these problems will increase the number of tourists coming to Didim," she said.
