BERLIN - A Turkish film stand has been opened for the first time at the European Film Market Fair as part of the Berlin Film Festival, or the Berlinale, with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture.
The European
Film Market Fair, which has been held for the past five years, has become of significant international importance. During the fair, film producers, distributors, sales agencies and directors from all over the world meet to work on common film projects. Also, European Union funding organizations have opened their own stands to speak to young producers and to offer funding incentives. Foundations are laid for many multinational films during the fair.
The Turkish stand at the Berlinale has been organized by the Television and Cinema Film Producers Union, or TESİYAP. "There is an intense demand for the fair this year. Many Turkish films have had the opportunity to be marketed internationally. Cinema is one of the most important tools for promotion in the contemporary world," said Turkey’s Consul General in Berlin Mustafa Pulat.
Pulat said Turkish cinema had progressed in recent years. "Many Turkish producers and filmmakers win awards at international festivals. I hope this success will continue."
’European films do not have big budgets’
Beki Probst, director of the European Film Market that has been running the commercial business of the Berlinale for 20 years, said filmmaking in Europe was not dependent on big studios and independent films were always produced. "The budgets of European films are not always very big. That is why there is no Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt in these films," he said.
Probst said Turkish cinema took big leaps in recent years. "Turkish cinema made a name for itself last year with ’The Three Monkeys’ at Cannes and Nobel Prize author Orhan Pamuk was a jury member the previous year. But these things come in waves. At festivals like this, a country is mentioned one year and another country is mentioned the following year," he said.
