FM Gul: Barzanis irrational leadership will only create problems for his people

On his way back from a trip to Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul blasted northern Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani for statements made in regards to Turkey's need to "get accustomed to an independent Kurdistan." Gul said that Barzani was carrying out "irrational and fantasy-laden leadership on a maximum level."

He noted further: "I do not want to get into a polemic, or even really address them on this. But statement's like Barzani's, especially during such a critical period for Iraq, when we in Turkey have adopted such an all-embracing, constructive stance, a stance in which we announce a policy of links with Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmenis, a stance where we repeat 'Iraqis have to decide the fate of Iraq,' either these staments are on purpose, or Barzani is in deep fantasy and irresponsibility. All I will say is this: this type of irrational, fantasy-based leadership in this region has always gotten the people of the region into trouble. The best example of this is Saddam Hussein. Iraq could have been one of the world's richest countries, it could have been a country of prosperity. But instead the people have for years been in poverty and pain."

Gul also warned: "If they don't want to open up to Turkey's sibling-like approach, it's their business. But everyone should have learned by now by looking at the events in this region from over the past 10-15 years. If they want to be good to their own people, they must be realistic."
