Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül struck back against the YÖK (Higher Education Authority), which launched an investigation of Bilkent University after the foreign minister’s daughter, Kübra Gül, attended her graduation ceremony from the school wearing a turban despite a constitutional ban on headscarves in universities.

Labelling the treatment of his daughter as intolerant, FM Gül also criticized the media. “Some writers stooped so low as to compare my daughter to Paris Hilton,” he said. A columnist from Turcuman newspaper had written that Kübra Gül, like the American millionaire heiress who initially received what some considered a lenient prison sentence after violating a parole agreement, should not receive special privileges.

Gül’s daughter graduated from the Industrial Engineering Department of Bilkent University in Ankara on 13th June, having worn a wig to university for four years. She wore a red and white headscarf at the graduation ceremony. The YÖK filed papers to begin its inquiry two days later.
