ANKARA - The last surviving Turkish veteran of the Independence War (1919-1923) died yesterday in Istanbul at the age of 105.
According to information released by the First Army Command, Mustafa Şekip Birol, who was being treated at the GATA Military Hospital, will be laid to rest Friday at the Karacabey Cemetery, after prayers at the Selimiye Mosque.
Retires in 1952
Birgöl, the son of a navy commander in the Ottoman Military, was a graduate of Edirne Kuleli Military Academy.
He joined the Turkish national forces and was appointed to the Afyon Front as a second lieutenant. He participated in the final battle in August 1922 before being posted in Samsun on the Black Sea Coast.
He retired from the army as a colonel in 1952.
