ISTANBUL - The 12 films competing for the International Federation of Film Critics, or FIPRESCI, Award at the 12th International Flying Broom Women’s Film Festival from have been announced.
Director Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s "Pandora’nın Kutusu" (Pandora’s Box) will represent Turkey in the competition that will take place May 7 to 14.
Twelve films will compete at the festival’s "Each Has A Different Color" section for FIPRESCI Award. This year’s FIPRESCI jury, which is made up of Polish Anita Piotrowska, Swedish Leif Joley, and Turkish Nil Kural, will choose one of the films from the nine countries that include Germany, the United States, Argentina, India, Holland, Hong Kong, Portugal, Russia and Turkey. The awarded
film will be announced and screened at the closing ceremony May 14.
Two films from Germany will join the competition. First is Turkish-origin Buket Alakuş’s "Finnish Tango." The film, which won the Audience Award last year at the German Film Awards, is the story of a young man named Alex.
The other German film in the competition is "The Anarchist’s Wife," which won the Peace Award at the Bernhard Wicki Film Awards. Directors Marie No‘lle and Peter Sehrduo, who previously worked together in films like "Love The Hard Way" and "Obsession," focus on the Spanish Civil War this time.
For independent film buffs
The festival has a surprise for American independent film buffs. "Good Dick," by young director Marianna Palka, is an effective love story but not cliche. Another film representing U.S. cinema is Nina Paley’s "Sita Sings the Blues." This is the first animated movie to compete for the FIPRESCI Award. The film has won many international awards.
Famous Indian actress Nandita Das is behind the camera this time and shoots "Firaaq," the story of a group of people after the massacre in India’s Gujarat in 2002. "The Way We Are" is another Asian film in the festival. Famous director of Hong Kong cinema Ann Hui portrays the story of two women who are trying to have a new family. Ustaoğlu’s "Pandora’s Box" is representing Turkey and is in the program for many film festivals this year. After the screening of the film in the competition, she will answer questions.
