ISTANBUL - The one-day Miller Freshtival that will be organized by Miller on May 30 in Istanbul, will introduce music fans to fresh names on the local and international scenes. As well as music, the festival will also be a ground for small shops selling work by young designers, exhibition and filming opportunities.

There won’t be many sing-alongs at the "Miller Freshtival," which aims not to bring in world-renowned stars to perform their pop hits, but to introduce music fans to fresh names on the local and international scenes.

The one-day event will be held May 30 in the Turkcell Kuruçeşme Arena, a popular Istanbul venue for big concerts, and will be organized by Miller, the latest beer brand to lend its name to a music festival in Turkey’s largest city.

Gabriella Cilmi, an Australian singer who is considered in line to the throne currently held by Amy Winehouse, is set to headline the festival. Other foreign acts include the British band Friendly Fires, the Manchester electro-pop group The Whip and the French electronic artist Joakim, who has incorporated different rhythms to create his own pop-music style.

The Istanbul-based electronic group Portecho, comprised of Tan Tunçag and Deniz Cuylan, will also take the stage at the Miller Freshtival, while another Turkish group, Kung Fu, is expected to provide one of the event’s most entertaining shows. This band of talented Turkish musicians used to play every week at Kadıköy’s Buda Bar. They recorded their first album last month and won a Miller Music Factory Award last year with their cover version of a song by the late Turkish singer Barışmanço. The four-member band will play both cover songs and new tunes as part of their 4 p.m. festival set.

The festival’s first performance belongs to Multitap, whose lead singer, Siyami Sümer, won an award in the dance/production category of the Miller Music Factory competition. Working with various names in the music industry, the members of this Turkish band are preparing to release their first album - and to bring a cool breeze to the newly developing dance-music scene in Turkey.

Although the Miller Freshtival is just a one-day event, it will not limit itself to music. There will be small shops selling work by young designers, a photography exhibition of images of previous Miller Music performers, an area to play Rock Band and Wii video games and a wall for graffiti artists who want to show off their skills. Young directors will also shoot a short film during the festival.

Organizers hope that the weather will be good and the participants will enjoy the sun and spending time by the Bosphorus. Part of the festival grounds will be filled with big, puffy pillows for those who want to sit and relax while enjoying all the different tunes.

A special performance by The Passengers, who take a vertical approach to their art, will draw interest from festivalgoers. Incorporating theater, dance, acrobatics, music and plastic arts, the group uses parks, city squares, historic buildings and industrial wastelands as stages for their stunning shows.

Non-stop music
Young new talent Gabriella Cilmi is best known for her hit song "Sweet About Me" and has already sat atop music charts around the world. This will be her first time in Istanbul. Cilmi, who is considered one of the most successful voices in recent years, will perform songs from her album "Lessons to Be Learned."

Friendly Fires, who combine indie rock with disco tunes, will take the stage at 9:30 p.m., right before Cilmi. The band formed in 2006 and has a strong following in Turkey and around Europe. They first drew critical attention with their EP "Photobooth," which had a limited release and was sold out in a few days - a major sign of their impending fame.

Known as one of the most successful recent bands to come out of Manchester, The Whip appeals to fans of rock and alternative music as much as those of electronic and dance. Often compared to Hot Chip and Klaxons, The Whip has performed in many different countries, but this will be the band’s first show in Istanbul. Joakim, one of the event’s prominent DJs, was discovered by the important record label Kitsune and has done remixes with the likes of Tiga, Annie and Late of the Pier.

One of the biggest supporters of new talents in Turkey’s music scene, the Miller festival has something for everyone. Tickets are on sale through the Biletix Web site for 33.50 Turkish Liras. The doors will open at 2 p.m. and the performances will start at 3 p.m.
