ISTANBUL - Fenerbahçe has continued its poor form that has been ongoing since the start of the year, going down at the hands of Istanbul Municipality on Sunday.
The Yellow Canaries are yet to win a game in the Turkcell Super League in 2009 and this poor form continued against lowly Istanbul Municipality, who recorded a 2-0 victory.Â
Taking the lead early with a goal by İskender Alın in the fourth minute, Istanbul Municipality did well to cool the game tempo, but the referee and the atmosphere did their best to assist. While strong winds troubled
Fenerbahçe in dictating the tempo, referee Cüneyt Çakır was heavy with the whistle and showed a flurry of yellow cards to virtually make it impossible to play three or four minutes without stopping. With seven yellow cards and three send-offs, Cüneyt Çakır was overwhelmingly interventionist in the game.
There were no questions asked about bias as both teams suffered from his rage but at the end of the day, it ruined the game for anybody watching. Namibian midfielder Razundara Tjikuzu made the score 2-0 in the 80th minute, only 10 minutes before being sent off.
Fener players, however, were also not faultless, as Coach Luis Aragones later admitted.
"They were better today," he said. When asked why Fenerbahçe had been consecutively outplayed, he said: "They are not playing better than us, but they can put on the battle better than us. We had more chances than they did, but we could not score."
Earlier in 2009, Fener settled for draws in games against Trabzonspor and Gaziantepspor and the loss to Municipality extended Fenerbahçe’s unwanted streak of games without wins to three.
