ISTANBUL - Hürriyet, Doğan Media Group’s flagship newspaper, will continue investing in the digital sphere to become ’an integrated life platform,’ its chief executive said.
Speaking Thursday night at a gathering held in Istanbul to connect the daily’s Web portal hurriyet.com.tr with advertisers, Vuslat Doğan Sabancı said the Internet is today a medium with proven business models. Hurriyet.com.tr is Turkey’s most-visited news portal, reaching 2 million unique visitors a day.
The Web portal has invested continuously since it began publishing online 12 years ago, said Sabancı, who added that the Hürriyet team has created a success story by uniting the principles that constitute the core of the newspaper’s principles with the wonder, surprise and creativity of the Internet.
"Advertisers have not yet started to utilize this medium efficiently,"she said. "With the proper orientation of interactive units that agencies develop gradually, we expect a performance-based and profile-focused system."
In the United States, the New York Times Web site ranks 23rd in visitor numbers, noted Ertuğrul Özkök, the editor-in-chief of Hürriyet. In Turkey, Hurriyet.com.tr ranks fifth or sixth, he said adding that Hürriyet brand has played a great role in the success of the Web site.
"Hurriyet.com.tr, which ranks 302nd worldwide according to Alexa, is the most-visited Web site in Turkey after Google, Facebook, YouTube and Microsoft Live Search," said Fatih Çekirge, the editor-in-chief of Hurriyet.com.tr.
