Deniz Baykal, leader of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party receives a very important report at a time when debates on tapping activites dominate the agenda.

The report says:

- The team, consisting of 35 people, was promoted by the prime minister to the country’s Telecommunication Communication Administration, which draws attention.

- An individual by the name of Basri Aktepe is promoted to head the Technical Unit (the unit responsible for carrying out listening activities), and fills the most important chair of this team.Â

-Aktepe is listed in 15th place in the report entitled, "Police supporting Fethullah (a pro-Islamic group)" that is prepared by Turkish police and submitted to the State Security Court in 1999.

According to this report it is fair to say that a person who is listed as being "a supporter of Fethullah" was promoted to head the unit that carries out tapping activities in the country.

Deniz Baykal gave more details about the report yesterday.

BAYKAL TO TAKE THE ISSUE TO PARLIAMENT

Baykal summarizes the report as:

"Everybody is focusing their attention on the 'yes' or 'no' buttons on CHP's Secretary General Onder Sav's mobile phone in the tapping incident and missing the main point. The report is obvious and what is more, the report was issued by the police department. And the promoted members of staff belong to the unit in which the prime minister makes promotions directly."

Baykal told that he would take the issue to parliament and added the situation that Sav experienced was not as simple as it seemed.

An organization planned this and the reality would soon be clearly revealed, he added.

I don’t even know Basri Aktepe.

But with the conjuncture that Turkey is passing through, the signs are not good.

If we look back at the recent claims regarding incidents of surveillance and tapping;

The deputy chairman of the Constitutional Court charged, "I am being followed and my conversations are being monitored," when he becomes aware that a car is following him.

It is revealed that the car in question belongs to the police. Ankara's chief of police responds by saying, "We do not have any mobile tapping devices." But later, it is discovered that they do in fact have such technology.

The police department claims the car belongs to the narcotic department; but this claim can not be clarified.

It remains unclear why the suspected car fled the scene after the deputy chairman took notice of its activities.

The police department prepares an internal report...

The leader of the main opposition party announces the report...

The outcome is the public losing confidence in the State.

Right now, this is the reality in Turkey.

NOTE: While conducting the phone interview with Baykal, the telephone was disconnected twice.

I redialed twice, but the line was cut again. In the end, his phone just wasn’t working...
