DÖRTYOL, Hatay - Construction of an iron and steel factory in the southern city of Hatay’s İskenderun Harbor is expected to be completed next year.

Once operational, the new factory, which is being built by a Turkish-Russian joint venture, will enable employment opportunities for more than 2,000 people. It will also contribute $1.75 billion added value to Turkey’s economy.

Atakaş Holding has started construction of the factory in the Dörtyol district of İskenderun, in collaboration with Russia’s steel and iron giant Magnitogorsk Iron-Steel Works, or MMK, said Atakaş Holding Board Chairman Recep Aktaş. Completion of construction, which is expected to cost a total of $1.7 billion, is to be completed in 2010, he said. Once completed, the factory will be the region’s second flat iron production facility after İsdemir.

The ground breaking of the factory was done March 15, 2008. The construction continues at full speed, said Aktaş.

The factory’s galvanize unit has a capacity of 900,000 tons and its painting unit has a capacity of 400,000 tons. As the factory begins to operate at full capacity, its annual flat iron production will be anywhere from 2.5 million tons to 3.6 million tons.

"Our region will become much more appealing when this new factory becomes operational," said Cemal Talay, chairman of the Dörtyol chamber of commerce and industry.

The number of registered companies in the region has increased 20 percent compared to a year earlier, said Talay. "The number of active companies in the region has reached 1,500 and due to foreign interest the value of the properties in the region has doubled."
