ANKARA - Turkey, one of the world’s biggest boron producers, is increasing its exports despite the global turmoil. Eti Mine Works General Management said it targets $650 million in exports this year.
The company, which exports most of the boron it produces, also aims to diversify production. Last year, Eti targeted $500 million in exports, but thanks to new connections and orders, the figure reached $520 million. Eti currently owns 72 percent of the world’s total boron reserves. The company’s boron export target for 2012 is $1 billion.
Boron is exported to 70 countries, mainly to Europe, the Far East and the United States.
Elemental boron is used as a dopant in the semiconductor industry, while boron compounds play important roles as light structural materials, insecticides and preservatives, and reagents for chemical synthesis.
