ESKİŞEHİR-The hats worn by cartoon classics the Smurfs are from the central Anatolian province of Eskişehir, said Mustafa Tekeli, the head of Eskişehir Tourism and Presentation Association, adding that it is the Phrygian hat representing freedom.
The Phrygians were a Balkan people who migrated to Anatolia. Settling in central Anatolia they built a strong kingdom under the rule of Midas, and Eskişehir was one of the kingdom’s central places.
"Phrygian culture is one of the Anatolian-rooted cultures that influenced the world most. King Midas, the legend of the golden touch, pan flute, curing waters and the Phrygian hat, which is the symbol of freedom and independence, belong to Anatolia and Eskişehir," Tekeli said. The Phrygian hat was the symbol of revolutionaries in the French revolution, and it is the national symbol of Venezuela, Cuba, Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina, El Salvador, Colombia, Haiti, and Nicaragua, Tekeli said, adding that it is also used in the emblems of many cities but are not existent in Turkey and Eskişehir.
