Envoy’s effort stirs crisis

ANKARA - More than just a party faux pas, the effort of U.S. Ambassador to Ankara James Jeffrey to gather the Israeli and Saudi Arabian ambassadors at a dinner has turned into a minor diplomatic scandal here.
"I was surprised when the U.S. ambassador invited me to dinner with Israel’s ambassador. As a professional diplomat, he should have known that there are currently no ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel," Saudi Arabian Ambassador El Huseyni said Friday. According to El Huseyni, Jeffrey informed him that Israeli ambassador would be at the same table with him only when he arrived at the U.S. ambassador’s residence.
