ANKARA - Turkey’s two minor center-right parties announced yesterday that the aim is for unification talks to be finalized by the end of 2009.

The Democrat Party, or DP, and the Motherland Party, or ANAVATAN, started talks after last month’s election of veteran politician Hüsamettin Cindoruk as the leader of the DP, in a second effort to merge after their defeat in the 2007 elections.

Hüsamettin Cindoruk met ANAVATAN leader Salih Uzun and independent Rize deputy Mesut Yılmaz yesterday to agree on a road map for unification. Yılmaz is also a former leader of ANAVATAN. "We hit the road with the intention of completing the unification process by the end of this year," Uzun said after the meeting. There are no problems that would deter a compromise or an agreement between the two parties, Cindoruk also confirmed. Party leaders also agreed to set up a joint committee that would coordinate work toward unification. Yılmaz welcomed this move as well.
