ANKARA - The Education Ministry has revealed plans for a project to help determine the athletic potential of children. A national database will be created to store the growth records of selected primary school children. Within the scope of the project, "Test of skills for a healthier society and champions," male and female students from the fourth and fifth grades will be evaluated.
Body mass index, flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, speed, cardiovascular endurance, height, weight and other aspects will be assessed. A variety of electronic and manual equipment will be used. Parents’ permission will be obtained before performing the tests. Each participating student will receive a printed report of the results.
Database will be formed
At the end of testing, a nationwide database will be formed. The Education Ministry hopes it will be useful in evaluating the athletic aptitude of certain children based on body types and performance. The tests will be repeated each year in the same age group. Skill tests will be performed on children in the second stage of the project and the results will be used as a tool to single out children who will be encouraged toward sports and sports academies.
"The Youth and Sports General Directorate may access the children’s measurements through a module in the ministry’s database. Sports-related institutions, federations first and then foundations, will have access to the children’s skill-level without needing to scout for them and no mistakes will be made," said İsmail Toksöz, an official from the Education Ministry.
Sports in Turkey will benefit
Toksöz said strong frontal muscles develop in football players while back muscles are more developed in wrestlers. Volleyball and basketball players develop muscles in the upper body. "This move will be a good tool to determine which students are better suited to which sport. Sports in Turkey will benefit," he said.
