ISTANBUL - Türkel Minibaş, a well-known critic of policies pursued by the International Monetary Fund, died Friday. Minibaş was a professor of economic development and international economics.

One of the leading economists of Turkey died Friday at the age of 55 from cancer. Türkel Minibaş an academic at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Economics, was also a columnist for the Cumhuriyet newspaper. She had been fighting stomach cancer for a year.

Born in 1953 in Istanbul, Minibaş graduated from Pacific Palisades High School in Los Angeles, where she studied with an American Field Service, or AFS, scholarship. She graduated from Marmara University’s Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences in 1975. She became a professor of economic development and international economics in 1995.

Numerous studies
Minibaş published two books, "Underdeveloped Countries’ Financing Policies for Development and Turkey," and "The Adventure of Being Ahead of Time 1453-1980," as well as numerous other studies on the Turkish economy.

Also studying women and children, Minibaş was recently serving for the Economic Development and International Economics Sub-discipline at Istanbul University Faculty of Economics.

She was also the vice chairperson of the Association for Supporting the Contemporary Life, or ÇYDD, a member of the board of trustees of the Turkish Society for the Protection of Children and a founding member of many foundations such as the Türk Kültür Vakfı, or Turkish Culture Foundation, and the Social Democracy Foundation.

Comments on IMF
In her latest comments published in business daily Referans, Minibaş said the function of the International Monetary Fund, or IMF, has "ceased in the new global order."

"The IMF and the World Bank have now become clumsy organizations," she said. "We may easily say that the IMF will turn into an institution that provides consultancy for third world countries, rather than rallying and reviving economies. The actual function will be realized by the World Trade Organization or a new body. [The IMF] has completed its mission. IMF has no more space to move, and Turkey is its only big customer. The downgrading of Turkey by Standard and Poor’s should also be assessed within this scope. Despite not being in need of an IMF deal, Turkey is the only country that will save IMF. Therefore, it is IMF that embraces Turkey, not the reverse."
