With former Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit remaining in a coma at the GATA military hospital in Ankara where he was operated on for severe bleeding in his brain on May 18, friends and supporters are worried that the 81 year old leader may not awaken from the sleep which was induced by doctors as a precaution after his operation.
Despite this though, doctors at GATA maintain that Ecevit's brain functions are "normal," and that his coma status is a common reaction for a person his age.
Known popularly by all as "Karaoglan" or "Blackboy," (a reference to his striking black eyes and dark hair of his youth) Ecevit has millions of supporters throughout Turkey, many who have come to the gates of GATA over recent days to show their support and express their grief that the leader they once knew may be in his last days. Since May 18, 10 guest books of 150 pages each have been filled with entries from Ecevit's well-wishers.
