VERBIER, SWITZERLAND - The Swiss ski resort town of Verbier, in the southwestern corner of Valais close to France and Italy, is known for its tough slopes and cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Although there are over 30 restaurants on the slopes of Verbier, many offer self-service dining, reflecting the seriousness of the skiers and snowboarders to get back on the powdery snow. Yet a few good restaurants stand out over the rest. Here is a short list of the most popular Swiss eating establishments worth trying in the area:

Exceptional restaurant: Chez Dany

No doubt the best dining on the piste! The wooden chalet in the hamlet of Clambin is the most charming mountain restaurant in the region and is especially celebrated for its cheese dishes. With a relaxed atmosphere and amazing view of the 4,314-meter Combins Massiv and the Bagnes valley, Chez Dany is an excellent place for Croute au Fromage and one of the best spots for Swiss cheese fondue. Spaghetti with shrimp and saffron is also an excellent selection for those getting a bit tired of the heavy Swiss cheese dishes. The apple tartin or the daily special tartin selection is a wonderful yet a light dessert. Booking in advance is a must.

Ski in and pig out: La Marmotte

The Marmotte at the bottom of the Savoleyres Sud draglift is the place to binge on a traditional and filling Swiss rustic lunch. Try the Croute aux Fromage, which is basically dark bread soaked in local white wine and topped with cheese and/or sausage and mushrooms to bake in an oven. Very fulfilling yet might be difficult to get down on the slopes with such a full belly.

Rösti, a Swiss German specialty, is a peasant’s dish composed mostly of sliced potatoes topped with rich cheese, onions and bacon pieces. The light and fresh local salads are a refreshing side dish. The restaurant is also open at night and can make for an adventurous evening by getting back to town from the slopes on a sledge. Pedestrians might have a hard time locating it, as La Marmotte is 2-kilometer walk from the Carrefour area or via a skidoo ride (to be arranged in advance). The return back again is by sledges!

Art decor new edition: La Rouge

New for the winter 2008-9 season, La Rouge Restaurant and Bar is set in an Art Deco style building and at the foot of the well-known "La Rouge" ski lift. Serving a mix of international dishes like squid ink risotto with baby octopus and sea bass with fennels, the new venue offers two terraces for dining, which are packed on a sunny day, and aprs ski drinks as well as a typically Bordeaux-style wine cellar. For the evening, the downstairs area becomes a cozy lounge for after hours around a fireplace. Make sure to arrive early for a good table or reserve in advance.

Other restaurants include Le Carrefour (where the service is off and in some cases staff is rude) which specializes in classic fondue and rösti. The newly opened Le Cristal near the main ski lift station of Les Ruinettes has a breathtaking view of the valley from its entirely wood-panel terrace. Yet again the service is lags (taking about 2 hours to prepare a lunch) and the dishes are unpredictable.

Apres ski attractions

Vibrant and dynamic, Verbier offers skiers a lively variety of aprs ski options from British pubs to cocktails to homemade cakes, and of course great people watching. The most popular stop after the pistes is the outdoor bar at Fer ? Cheval in the town center. (Rue de Medran, Verbier. Tel. + 41 27 771 26 69; www.ferachaval.ch).

The Milk Bar, also in the town center, is famous for its hot chocolate and homemade tarts (Tel: + 41 27 771 67 77)
