ADANA - Adana residents woke up to dust Monday morning. The city is under a deep dust cloud and is expected to stay that way for two more days due to winds from Africa.
The Regional Meteorology Department released a statement saying that the low-pressure system from Africa coupled with northern winds caused the dust clouds to descend on the city late Saturday. The meteorology department expects the clouds to endure for two more days before dissipating. The dust clouds may cause visibility to drop to 1.5 kilometers. Local officials are asking city residents to be careful when driving.
Meteorology Department is expecting light rain for the two-day duration of the cloud cover. Temperatures in the city are expected to hit highs of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.
"It is hard to breathe. If it would just rain the air would clear but then you get mud everywhere. It is getting worse with time. I hope we do not have worse days ahead," said one Adana resident.
Health officials warned that the elderly, children and people with respiratory problems are most susceptible to the adverse affects of breathing in dust. They are urging people to stay indoors as much as possible and to keep doors and windows closed to reduce the amount of dust that makes its way inside.
