DİYARBAKIR - Three children found in a house filled with garbage in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır were taken from their mother and put into state protection, reports said yesterday. According to the Anatolia news agency, the three children, two boys and a girl, were found in the house after a tip-off to the prosecutor’s office.

The police went to the address provided Tuesday but were unable to enter because the mother had locked the door when she left. The officers climbed onto the roof of a neighboring house, finding the three children, aged five, seven and ten, living in a roofless house among the garbage. After viewing the photos taken of the house, the prosecutor decided to take the children away from the mother and place them in state protection.

In a medical check-up, doctors found the children’s feet had swollen from the cold and that all three were suffering from malnutrition and speech impediments. None of them was sent to school by their parents, it was reported. The prosecutor has initiated an inquiry against the father, accusing him of mistreating family members.
