ISTANBUL - The financial crisis is not the only reason for unemployment in Turkey, according to the president of the Sabancı Foundation, who said one of the greatest underlying reasons is a general lack of structure. Speaking at a news conference celebrating the Sabancı Foundation’s 35th year, Güler Sabanci said unemployment has always been a key concern in Turkey’s agenda. Unemployment rates have never dropped below 9 percent, he said.
"We are all responsible for this issue, and in order to combat it we must not just find one solution, but a series of solutions that will address the issue now and provide security for Turkey’s future," Sabancı said. The Sabancı Foundation has contributed to the educational, social and structural development of Turkey over the years. With 121 centers and monuments across the Turkey the foundation has provided academic, sports, culture and social education and hundreds of health facilities.
The foundation’s latest project, which will be launched this year, is a 50 million Turkish Lira investment into a nano technology research center at Sabancı University in Istanbul. "In order for our country to reach a competitive level in the international arena we need to invest in innovative technology methods that will also aid the development of our country in the future," Sabancı said. The foundation will also be investing 5 million liras annually on a social development grant program. The program aims to enhance social development by promoting an environment where women, youth and people with disabilities can participate in society on equal terms as others. Associations, foundations, cooperatives and universities, which are legally established and based in Turkey, will be eligible for grants.
