BERLIN - The president of Doğan Holding, Aydın Doğan was presented the Golden Victoria Award at a ceremony in Berlin yesterday.
Doğan was awarded for his contribution to the integration and friendship of Turkey and Germany by the German Union of Magazine Publishers (Verband Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger-VDZ).
At the ceremony, a documentary on Doğan’s life was shown prior to German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble taking the stage.
He said the media was strong enough to erase the gap formed by the perception of "us and them." He said with their stories, journalists could create a joint history and Doğan, with his media organs, had done just that this summer.
Doğan’s was given his award for his contribution to Turkish-German friendship through the stories published before and after the national football teams of the two nations played at the Euro 2008 European Football Championship semi-final match. "Aydın Doğan and the media organs he owns defended a good friendship," said Schaeuble.
He thanked Doğan and noted that the award showed how important his contributions were. Doğan, after being presented with the award, said he was honored and thanked the VDF. He said the award had increased his responsibilities, adding that cultural differences should be seen as richness, not something that creates concern. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking at the ceremony, said:
"Even though we may not agree on everything, an exchange of ideas can only enrich us. Aydın Doğan showed us how much we can learn from the media."
