An EU expert on Turkey, Alessandro Missir di Lusignano (39), has been found murdered in his villa in Morocco, along with his wife, Arianne Lagasse Delong (35). Born in Izmir, Luisgnano had recently been assigned as the EU's Moroccan representative in the Moroccan capital Rabat.
He and his wife Arianne were found stabbed to death in their rented villa in Rabat this week, though their four children, who were upstairs in their bedrooms, were left unharmed. The Italian Foreign Ministry has said that the incident was not political, and instead the result of a botched robbery. A car and some valuables were found missing from the villa. Lusignano had spoken fluent Turkish, and had played an important role in the Turkish quest for EU membership. He was known in EU circles for his able expertise, as well as his politesse.
