BURSA- For winter sports, Bursa’s Uludağ is perhaps the most well-known and developed ski resort in Turkey. With consistant snow from December on, many head up to the mountain on weekends.

Just 22 kilometers from Bursa is the "Great" Uludağ Mountain. Today, thanks to the fast ferries from Yenikapı cruising directly to Bursa, Uludağ lies only 3 hours from Istanbul.

For winter sports fans and those who just want to get away for some fresh mountain air, Uludağ offers a variety of skiing activities- and needless to say a highly social aprs ski and dinning opportunities.

Uludağ resort is currently divided into two sections: Bölge One and Bölge Two. The hip and charming boutique hotel, Mountain, with just 23 rooms, is located between the two Areas and conveniently right next to a cable car.

Famous for its aprs ski happy hour parties and late night club scene, the hotel also has a small but selective menu of rich home made platters.

While mega large hotels nearby serve an open buffet every meal, Grand Yazıcı’s Mountain Hotel & Club does simple, with an a al carte menu. The focus is no doubt hearty and nutritious comfort foods that sticks to the ribs so skiers can use it to fuel them down the slopes.

'Inside bread' Turkish sausage
For lunch time, if the weather conditions suit it, sitting outside in the glowing sunshine and people watching here is a must. A wide selection of Turkish style pizzas called pide are the most popular item on the menu.

Prepared in a traditional brick oven, the doughy and authentic pide is good for stoking up on carbohydrates. Another favorite option is "ekmek arasi sucuk". Made inside half a soft loaf of bread, the Turkish sausage, sucuk, is a Bursa/ Uludağ ritual.

Coming up from the skirts of the mountain, a large number of cozy sausage houses can also be seen. For lighter fare, grilled chicken is a nice option, although at times overcooked or a bit dry.

For vegetarians, the only choice is the mixed greens or cheese pide. The chef, however, was nice enough to offer nourishing vegetarian options- off the menu- like green lentils with chopped potatoes and carrots with white rice.

Dinner service is more formal than at lunch, as ironed white cloths, polished silverware and giant wine glasses are placed on tables dimly lit by candle. Dishes and portion sizes are somewhat inconsistent; for those staying at the Hotel and dinning frequently at the restaurant, this issue tends to become more obvious.

A few noteworthy dishes are Kuzu Karski- an Armenian meat dish famous in the city of Kars, served with shredded cabbage salad; Kuzu Külbastı- thin lamb slices marinated with thyme, extra flat and succulent here; Kuzu Pirzola- Turkish style lamb chops; and for seafood, the grilled salmon fillet with homemade potato puree is quite agreeable. Again the quality of the meat dishes, aridity and size fluctuate frequently.

One of the best aspects of eating here is no doubt the modern and hip dŽcor from the entrance on. If it weren’t for the piercing Turkish pop music in the background, one could even forget for a moment and think they were in the French AlpsÉ
