ISTANBUL - Istanbul Design Weekend 2009, organized for the first time this year to promote and develop design in Istanbul, will welcome design and art buffs from Thursday through Sunday in various neighborhoods of the city. Istanbul Design Weekend, or IDW, events will be held in the Nişantaşı, Taksim-Beyoğlu-Galata, Etiler-Levent-Ortaköy and Şişli districts.

Nearly 60 local and foreign artists and designers will participate in the IDW, which is being organized by Dream Design Factory, or DDF, in collaboration with Italian Design Partners, the force behind Zona Tortana Design in Milan and other projects.

The four-day event will be divided in two core areas linked by a common topic Ğ "Mediterranean Design, Between Present and Future" Ğ that will allow participating venues to promote their show displays, installations and new products to visitors.

The event will kick off Wednesday with the opening of DesignLibrary Istanbul in Eski Şapka Fabrikası in Hasköy. This international project entirely dedicated to gathering all branches of design together under the same roof is Turkey’s first design library and only the third in the world.

The event will continue with a June 18 award ceremony for a competition on "Mediterranean Design," organized by Palermodesign and coordinated by design-history professor Vanni Pasca.
