ISTANBUL - The long-awaited Depeche Mode concert in Istanbul has reportedly been cancelled due to lead singer Dave Gahan falling ill.
The band was not able to perform its Athens concert, which was scheduled for Tuesday, because of Gahan’s illness. The singer, who fell ill before Tuesday night’s scheduled performance, was rushed to an Athens hospital, where he remained Wednesday morning. Neither organizers nor the hospital would say what he was suffering from. Didi Music, the organizer of the Athens event, told spectators to hold onto their tickets in case the singer was well enough to reschedule the concert. As Istanbul fans awaited word on whether Gahan, 47, would recover before Thursday’s scheduled show at santralistanbul, the cofounder of organizer Purple Concerts said the Istanbul gig has also been nixed.
"I just hung up the phone with bad news," Cengizhan Yeldan told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. "I am sorry, but there won’t be a Depeche Mode concert." Yeldan said he heard that Gahan was not in good condition and was still in the hospital.
"Even though the band continues its world tour, it will not be possible for them to stop in Istanbul, otherwise they would have to reschedule all the other concerts," Yeldan said. "That would create a domino effect." Yeldan said fans who already purchased tickets could get their money back or wait until the next concert is scheduled.
Organizers of the Istanbul concert say they do not know if Depeche Mode, which has performed twice before in Turkey, will be able to reschedule the concert anytime soon, but Yeldan speculated that the band might return at the end of its current world tour. Didi Music’s official Web site published an announcement Tuesday by the band’s manager, apologizing for canceling the show.
It read: "Dave Gahan is ill. We’ve had a doctor in to see him backstage and unfortunately the doctor’s advice is that Dave cannot perform. In fact he is now on his way to hospital for a check up.
Dave really wanted to be well enough to perform and apologizes for letting you fans down.
We are hopeful Dave will recover by tomorrow and that we can re-schedule the show."
