ANKARA - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has invited main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, leader Deniz Baykal to Iraq, the private channel CNNTürk reported yesterday.
Bahroz Galali, the representative of Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, or PUK, in Ankara, transmitted the invitation to deputy CHP leader Onur Öymen during a meeting at the Turkish party’s headquarters Tuesday.
"Galali told me that Talabani closely follows the CHP’s approaches on Iraq," Öymen told CNNTürk. He added that Baykal’s schedule is very busy, but they will evaluate the invitation within an appropriate time.
"A delegation from Talabani’s party will visit Ankara and have talks with the CHP," Öymen said, adding that Baykal’s Iraq visit may be finalized according to the talks. During the meeting, Galali also drew attention to Talabani’s expressed wish to develop relations between the two political parties. Both the CHP and the PUK, which is known by the acronym KYB in Turkish, are members of Socialist International.
Speaking during a visit to Adıyaman, Baykal said he had not yet received Talabani’s invitation. He also touched upon the draft bill about the clearing of land mines along the Syrian border, saying, "The passage of this draft law should be prevented." "We should show the world that there are still those who care for Turkey," Baykal told the assembled citizens. "Lay hold of the government and do not allow the passage of the draft law."
