ISTANBUL - Beşiktaş may suspend star player Matias Delgado’s contract until the Argentinean recovers from his groin injury, coach Mustafa Denizli said Thursday.
Captain Delgado’s injury caused a blow to the Turkcell Super League champion’s pre-season trainings, as he was reported to be out of selection for more than four months. The attacking midfielder had a reportedly successful surgery in Spain on Thursday, but
Beşiktaş may not wait for the Argentinean to fully recover.
In order to stave off foreign player limitations, Beşiktaş will apply to the Football Federation to suspend the player’s contract, opening a spot on the squad for another footballer.
"It seems that we will not be able to use Delgado for four months," said Denizli. "If we have such a chance [to suspend a contract], why not use it?"
The Turkish boss said the player also welcomed the decision. "He was warm about the idea," said Denizli. "I can almost say that it was his idea. Whatever decision we make, it will be positive for the club and the player."
In 2008,
Fenerbahçe made a successful application to the Football Federation to suspend Stephen Appiah’s contract after the Ghanaian was injured and to sign Claudio Maldonado.
