ISTANBUL - Fenerbahçe is to dismiss its Spanish coach Luis Aragones and replace him with German Christoph Daum, Spanish and Turkish press reports said yesterday.

Aragones, who joined the Istanbul side last year after leading his country to the Euro 2008 title in Vienna, has had a disappointing season with Fenerbahçe finishing only fourth in the Turkcell Super League.

Spanish daily El Mundo reported on Monday that Fenerbahçe has sacked the 70-year-old coach.

After failing to lead his team to the league title, Aragones saw his side suffer a humiliating 4-2 loss at the Fortis Turkish Cup final, which was seen as his last chance to remain at the Yellow Canaries’ helm.

Although Fenerbahçe board member Nihat Özdemir refused to comment, German daily Bild reported that Daum already agreed on terms with Fenerbahçe.

Daum’s team FC Cologne confirmed the deal too, with manager Michael Meier declaring that the coach opted to leave relying on an article on his contract. "It was a surprise and sad news for us," said Meier.

FC Cologne released a statement yesterday saying that Daum informed club chairman Wolfgang Overath about his decision late Monday.

Daum is no stranger to Turkish football having already been in charge of Fenerbahçe from 2003 to 2007 during which time it won two league titles. He was also in charge of another Istanbul side Beşiktaş from 1994 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2002. He also won the title with the Black Eagles in the 1994-1995 campaign.

Daum’s ties with Turkish football continues while he was coaching FC Cologne, as he purchased former Fenerbahçe captain Ümit Özat and former Galatasaray goalkeeper Faryd Ali Mondragon to his side.
